Quadriennale Düsseldorf 2014

The Quadriennale Düsseldorf 2014 was an official cultural project of the City of Düsseldorf. Under the guiding theme “Beyond Tomorrow” (April–August 2014), thirteen institutions across the city collaborated to explore artistic visions of the future.

A central format was the Expedition series—performance-based art mediation. The expeditions were conceived, organized, and carried out by artists Axel Naß and Nils Kemmerling and translated curatorial themes into embodied, collective experiences across museum contexts and urban space. I participated as part of the Q40 team.

Die Quadriennale Düsseldorf 2014 war ein offizielles Kulturprojekt der Stadt Düsseldorf. Unter dem Leitthema „Über das Morgen hinaus“ (April–August 2014) arbeiteten dreizehn Institutionen stadtweit zusammen, um künstlerische Zukunftsentwürfe zu untersuchen.

Ein zentrales Format bildeten die Expeditionen – performancebasierte Kunstvermittlung. Die Expeditionen wurden von den Künstlern Axel Naß und Nils Kemmerling konzipiert, organisiert und durchgeführt und übersetzten kuratorische Fragestellungen in körperlich erfahrbare, kollektive Prozesse in Museumszusammenhängen und im urbanen Raum. Ich nahm als Teil des Q40-Teams teil.

14th Expedition “RETREAT” (Q40)

Following a visit to “Unter der Erde. Von Kafka bis Kippenberger” at K21 Ständehaus, the Q40 team investigated Kris Martin’s outdoor work “Unter der Erde scheint die Sonne”. A temporary research setup explored descent, interiority, and perception beneath the surface using experimental camera movements and sound.

Nach dem Besuch der Ausstellung „Unter der Erde. Von Kafka bis Kippenberger“ im K21 Ständehaus untersuchte das Q40-Team Kris Martins Arbeit „Unter der Erde scheint die Sonne“. Ein temporäres Untersuchungslabor erforschte Hinabsteigen, Innerlichkeit und Wahrnehmung unter der Oberfläche mittels experimenteller Kamerafahrten und Klang.

20th Expedition “UTOPIA” (Q40)

Inspired by the Filmmuseum Düsseldorf exhibition “Visionen und Alpträume – Die Zukunft der Stadt im Film”, the Q40 team imagined how future urban space might have been envisioned in 1914. Using a self-built film set in the Ehrenhof, the team produced a silent-film vision combining utopian and dystopian motifs.

Angeregt durch die Ausstellung „Visionen und Alpträume – Die Zukunft der Stadt im Film“ im Filmmuseum Düsseldorf entwickelte das Q40-Team eine filmische Zukunftsvision aus der Perspektive des Jahres 1914, realisiert als Stummfilm auf einem selbst gestalteten Set im Ehrenhof.

21st Expedition “FINALE” (Q20 / Q40 / Q60)

On a self-built film set at Raketenstation Hombroich, participants produced the continuation of the UTOPIA film. The work functioned as the collective final project of all expedition teams.

Auf einem selbst gestalteten Filmset auf der Raketenstation Hombroich entstand die Fortsetzung des UTOPIE-Films als gemeinsames Abschlussprojekt aller Expeditionsteams.

23rd Expedition “CURIOSITY” (Q40)

After visiting the exhibition “Zum Beispiel: Les Immatériaux”, the Q40 team documented and measured the exhibition space in detail, creating an archive intended to enable future reconstruction.

Nach dem Besuch der Ausstellung „Zum Beispiel: Les Immatériaux“ dokumentierte das Q40-Team den Ausstellungsraum detailliert, um ein Archiv für eine mögliche zukünftige Rekonstruktion zu schaffen.
